Mary Jane Rodges
A Legacy of Education
Mary Jane Rodges was born on May 25, 1914 in Greenwood, MS. Her early years were spent on a rural farm with her family. Life on the farm was one of struggle and oppression. Yet, her vision for a better life was rooted in her confidence in higher learning. Her belief, her love for Education would play a major role in her future success.
Mrs. Rodges was a self-taught educator who attended various schools in the state of Mississippi such as Myrtle Hall High School and Rust College. Despite opposition, she returned to school to obtain her B.S. in Elementary Education from Mississippi Valley State University in 1959, graduating the same time as her youngest son, James. She further pursued her education by becoming the first African American to graduate with a Master’s degree in Education from Delta State University in 1971. As a mother of five children, she instilled education into her kids and other family members. Her generous spirit made her an encourager and advocate for anyone seeking better opportunities.
In 1999, Mrs. Rodges passed away, but her sheer fortitude and trailblazing spirit will forever be embedded in the memory of the Rodges family. MJ Rodges Academy is being established with her core values, in her honor, as a tribute her to legacy, a legacy of education, innovation, excellence and faith.
